Once this project is finished, the PHT technology will be used in clinical practice to select patients that will benefit the most from proton therapy.
Recently two proton radiotherapy centres have opened in the Netherlands: in Groningen and Maastricht. With the addition of a third proton therapy center, the Netherlands will be able to provide proton therapy to cancer patients across the country. Nevertheless, the capacity of these centers is still much lower than the demand. Therefore, some form of patient selection is needed. In this project we aim to set up a data infrastructure system based on PHT that allows physicians to develop model-based approaches to select the patients that benefit the most from proton therapy compared to conventional radiotherapy.
We are currently working on developing the infrastructure. More results will be available in the future.
The technology is ready to be implemented, but the implementation itself is the biggest challenge.
